Responsibilities

Allied Consultants seeks a Data Architect to evaluate, plan, and recommend data solutions for one of their Texas State Agency clients located in Huntsville Texas.  Our client has a diverse technology architecture which includes a large mainframe application system written in COBOL and using the DB2 relational database and VSAM file structure. They also have server-based Java/DB2 applications, which interface with the mainframe application.  These software applications are complex and with the many enhancements it has undergone, are in need of data review and refreshment.     

 

The major responsibilities of the Data Architect include analysis of the existing VSAM and DB2 databases/data; development of plans for the efficient migration and validation of the data; design of efficient file structures to support enhancements and migration of application systems; and development and validation of target databases for the data.

 

Responsibilities include the usage of and oversight of scripts, stored procedures, and tools for data exchange between DB2 databases and the existing Mainframe and Web based application systems.

 

Performs advanced and/or supervisory (senior-level) database administration work. Work involves providing direction and guidance in strategic operations and planning; providing for the efficient and effective storage, retrieval, customization, and archiving of data to ensure integrated database systems; planning, developing, and implementing database policies and procedures; and maintaining and verifying data integrity. May assign and/or supervise the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

 

Essential Job Duties:

  • Designs and oversees development of agency DB2 RDBMS systems to contain existing VSAM database data.
  • Coordinates development of scripts and usage of tools to load, extract and move data.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations on plans for tasks and work involved in the migration of data.
  • Evaluates, recommends, plans, documents, and implements enhancements to agency computer systems and processes.
  • Ensures compliance with agency security standards and policies.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Oversees the analysis, design, and maintenance of database structures.
  • Oversees logical and physical data modeling, evaluates relational database models, and reviews physical data models created from logical data models.
  • Oversees and/or coordinates the migrations to new data management system software levels and ensures that migrations are appropriately tested and validated.
  • Assesses future information requirements.
  • Designs, recommends, and implements procedures necessary to save, retrieve, and recover databases from hardware and software failures.
  • Develops and reviews policies and procedures to guide in the use and acquisition of database software and resources.
  • Develops goals and objectives for the use and improvement of an efficient and cost-effective database system.
  • Develops standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures designed to ensure the integrity of the database environment.
  • Evaluates and reviews database performance monitoring and implements efficiency improvements.
  • Modifies existing databases and database management systems.
  • Recommends and implements database security standards and controls, and user access levels.
